Dati.piemonte.it is a portal promoted by Regione Piemonte, that aims at facilitating public information sharing across the Public Administration bodies in Piedmont. It is today the only Italian experience of open public data availability and it enables private citizens to view and download free datasets about a number of public issues, like education, economic activities, health, road conditions, etc.

European public bodies produce thousands upon thousands of datasets every year. About everything from how our tax money is spent to the quality of the air we breathe. With the Open Data Challenge, the Open Knowledge Foundation and the Open Forum Academy are challenging designers, developers, journalists and researchers to come up with something useful, valuable or interesting using open public data.

ICONVIS participates in the Open Data Challenge using data from Dati.piemonte.it. To realize our ICONVIS demo, we downloaded several CSV dataset from this portal and we implemented a domain ontology, formally representing the knowledge contained in these files. Then we just configured ICONVIS to read the ontology and deactivated database management modules. We added some lines of code to correctly deal with external open data sources like DBpedia and Geonames... and that's it.

You're probably tired of waiting, so start demo!
